Hydroxycut Max Review

Even if you haven’t been searching long for a diet pill, you’ve likely heard of Hydroxycut. Manufactured by MuscleTech, the Hydroxycut line is the most popular brand of weight loss supplements in the world, selling close to 1 million products every year.

In that lineup is Hydroxycut Max, a diet pill formulated to help women lose weight. Because the Hydroxycut brand is so popular, I thought it would be beneficial to look beyond the name and see if Hydryoxycut Max merits the popularity.

In this review, you’ll find an overview of the Hydroxycut Max game plan, ingredients, side effects, manufacturers, and pricing.

What Makes Hydroxycut Max Unique?

Hydroxycut Max sets itself apart from the Hydroxycut line, because it is specifically designed to help women lose weight.

MuscleTech says Hydroxycut Max helps women reach their weight loss goals by increasing energy and burning fat. By including folic acid and iron, it caters to women’s needs more completely than competing diet pills. This is because women are often deficient in iron, and a daily folic acid supplement is recommended for women of childbearing age.

Since women carry 21 to 31 percent of their weight in fat, marketing a diet pill directly to women seems to be a winning business strategy. However, whether or not Hydroxycut Max is a winner depends on the product’s formula.

What Ingredients Are in Hydroxycut Max?

The so-called “female friendly blend” in Hydroxycut Max includes nearly 20 different ingredients. Unfortunately, a large portion of the formula is part of a proprietary blend, which masks ingredient quantities.

I often don’t like proprietary blends because some ingredients are only effective when taken in proven dosages, while others can cause side effects if the dosage is too high. With a proprietary blend, it is impossible to know if Hydroxycut Max contains the ingredient dosages needed to be effective and safe. Nevertheless, I’ll take a look at what we do know about the Hydroxycut Max formula.

Calcium (2 mg)

Calcium promotes weight loss to the tune of a 42 percent decrease in body fat, according to a 2009 study from the British Journal of Nutrition.

Calcium works by triggering small increases in thermogenesis. However, if you’re already getting enough calcium from your diet, additional calcium supplementation won’t produce weight loss.

Vitamin C (7 mg)

Vitamin C supports the immune system, but in high doses it actually helps synthesize L-carnitine—an amino acid that burns fat. However, you’ll need at least 75 mg of vitamin C daily for these benefits—a far cry from the 7 mg in Hydroxycut Max.

Folic Acid (200 mcg)

Folic acid is one ingredient added to the Hydroxycut Max blend to benefit women. An essential B vitamin, folic acid won’t facilitate weight loss but it can spur faster digestion and greater energy.

Iron (109 mg)

Iron is another “female friendly” ingredient. Most women are deficient in iron, a mineral that counteracts anemia. An iron supplement should help you stay healthy and have more energy while you’re trying to lose weight.

Proprietary Blend

The following ingredients are included in a 456 mg proprietary blend. I’ll highlight the most noteworthy ingredients.

L-Alanine

An amino acid that raises metabolism, L-alanine produces higher energy levels and may suppress appetite by regulating blood sugar levels.

L-Serine

Another amino acid, L-serine also raises energy levels and combats fatigue. Since a lack of energy is the number one reason women say they have trouble losing weight, L-serine may be a vital ingredient.

Caffeine Anhydrous

Caffeine anhydrous is simply caffeine without excess water. A mild fat burner, caffeine triggers thermogenesis and fat burning. This leads to a faster metabolism and higher energy.

Guarana

Guarana is a shrub native to South America. Its seeds contain twice the caffeine of coffee beans. Guarana works in a similar way as caffeine anhydrous, sparking fat burning and high energy.

Lady’s Mantle

Lady’s mantle is an herb often used for stomach problems. It alleviates diarrhea, water retention, diabetes, and muscle spasms.

Wild Mint

Wild mint extract is used mostly to treat diarrhea and menstrual cramps. Some allege it is a mild stimulant, but no studies exist on wild mint’s ability to influence weight loss.

Komjin

You probably know komjin as cumin. This spice treats digestive problems like diarrhea, bowel spasms, and gas. As a mild diuretic, it also relieves bloating and can cause some water weight loss.

Even without ingredient amounts, there’s nothing overly impressive about Hydroxycut Max. The list of ingredients reads more like a multivitamin for women than a diet pill. The only stimulants in the formula are caffeine and guarana, which produce decidedly moderate results.

Knowing this—combined with the small size of the proprietary blend—I doubt Hydroxycut Max is very effective.

Will There Be Hydroxycut Max Side Effects?

Hydroxycut Max does contain some stimulants, so there are bound to be side effects. With caffeine and guarana, you may experience jittery feelings, nausea, and anxiety. The amino acids in Hydroxycut Max also cause stomach upset.

Cumin is another concern. As a mild laxative, it can cause gas, loose stools, and a general lack of control in the intestinal tract.

Customer reviews for Hydroxycut Max posted on Amazon.com also mention headaches, insomnia, and rashes as side effects.

Can You Trust the Hydroxycut Name?

Another area of concern is the Hydroxycut name itself. As I mentioned before, the entire Hydroxycut line is owned and produced by MuscleTech Research and Development.

While Hydroxycut is popular, MuscleTech itself has run into problems in the past. In May 2009, the company received a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration after several Hydroxycut products were linked to liver damage, including one death.

The offending products were recalled, but a 2003 lawsuit revealed that while MuscleTech consultants had expressed serious concerns about Hydroxycut safety, MuscleTech continued to market the products. The lawsuit ended in a $100,000 settlement.

Though Hydroxycut Max is a relatively safe product itself, I still think MuscleTech’s history negatively affects the reliability of the Hydroxycut brand.

Where’s the Best Deal on Hydroxycut Max?

The good thing about Hydroxycut products is their availability. Sold everywhere from Wal-Mart to CVS, it’s not hard to find a deal on a Hydroxycut product. In the case of Hydroxycut Max, these were the best deals I found online:

GNC.com—$59.99
Amazon.com—$26.49
WalMart.com—$24.95
Walgreens.com—$19.99

If you catch a deal, this is a fairly low price for a diet pill.

Should You Try Hydroxycut Max?

Frankly, Hydroxycut Max does not offer an impressive formula. A small proprietary blend and moderately effective ingredients aren’t enough for me to recommend Hydroxycut Max, even if it is inexpensive.

Instead, I’d recommend spending a little more on a product that can do a whole lot more for your weight loss goals.
